In our last issue of Brush & Pen's Newsletter, From the Heart, I shared with you the process and making of this sacred work. How does an artwork painted a year ago relate to the times we are in and our everyday? Art, poetry, music and dance have transcended centuries evoking hearts, souls and minds of all generations. The arts of the present will do the same for people today and our future generations. This week I am writing a blog about the spirit behind my painting, "Evensong" and how it applies to our current and future times. Being that it is Holy Week for different cultures and the current pandemic around our world, I felt compelled to share the song of my heart revealed here with you.

What do you do when you don't know what to do?

The COVID-19 illness has dominated our attention, the details and worries of our lives before this global pandemic still exists. Everything good, bad, ugly and beautiful in our lives are still going on. Now we have more to be anxious about, afraid and aware of. This kind of life experience brings about a spiritual wake up call.

In our current troubled times of uncertainty and pestilence; people everywhere are reaching out in prayer from all faiths. Just think, right now all over the world, prayers are being said quietly, meditated on and being sung in songs of praise. There is a comfort knowing this. We hope for what is close to our hearts to be heard and answered. I believe in the power of prayer. Praying for me is that quiet time with God, reading His Word, spending the day sharing my thoughts and heart with Him and surrendering my soul to Him when I am creative. Painting "Evensong" was a poured offering of the sacred hours I dream with God, believe and build from within. Here, music was a part of my prayer in painting this spiritual work.

I listened to music from Lost in Meditation Meditative Gregorian Chants by Capella Gregoriana and Hopes and Dreams by Lisa Lynne. It wasn’t until listening to Sundance Season by R. Carlos Nakai that I came across his song, “Evensong” and experienced music and art connect deeply in the moments of painting. Something significant and meaningful emerged from layers of texture and color. And what took place was Oneness. A wholehearted spiritual experience and purpose with every touch of the palette knife and stroke of the brush. I just had to look up what that title meant. I never read or heard of this word before.

I found out that it means a service / devotion of evening prayers, psalms, and canticles of worship and gratitude. The dictionary referenced this word to the Native American Indian culture and the Christian Church. Upon further research, other cultures around the world also share the same practices for their faiths. As different as our belief systems in the world may be, we also have similarities. My painting,”Evensong” celebrates our similarities and differences that bring us together in respect, love and prayer. During this Holy Week and days ahead, let us come together to hope and believe!

just the word evensong resonates with something of a time when humanity was more connected to both nature and the land. lovely color and composition. it brings to mind monet.

Your words are like a soothing lullaby, whispering and bringing me hope, love and trust. And your painting reflects from where it came: heavenly. It looks like the lost Paradise for me.
